How to book more B2B meetings in Melbourne

Melbourne shares Sydney's clock but not its calendar or its industry mix. This guide is for in-house teams calling Melbourne businesses, from Melbourne or elsewhere. It covers where Melbourne's buyers sit, the Victorian holidays that empty calendars, call windows from each time zone and what changes on the call. The national rules and benchmarks are in the Australia playbook.

    Quick answer

How do you book more B2B meetings in Melbourne? Call Melbourne at 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm Melbourne time, segment by precinct, from the CBD and Docklands to the south east and west industrial corridors, and plan around the Victorian calendar, especially the Grand Final Friday and Melbourne Cup weeks. Use Victorian proof points, because Melbourne buyers notice when a pitch was written for Sydney.

What is different about selling into Melbourne

Melbourne has a deeper industrial base than Sydney and a large concentration of banking and superannuation headquarters. That gives a cold caller two very different buyers: corporate teams in the CBD and Docklands with formal procurement, and owner-led manufacturers and distributors in the south east and west who can say yes on the call.

Melbourne buyers are quick to spot a pitch written for Sydney. Use Victorian examples, mention the precinct or corridor the business is in, and do not assume a national headquarters in Sydney makes the decision. Many national companies run their operations, finance or technology functions out of Melbourne.

The Victorian calendar is the other difference. Victoria has public holidays no other state has, and a spring racing season that takes senior people out of the workplace for days at a time. Plan the year around it rather than discovering it in October.

Call windows into Melbourne from each time zone

Melbourne runs on AEST, UTC+10, and AEDT, UTC+11, on the same dates as Sydney. The peak windows are 10am to 11am, when 22% of Nousu's dials reach a live person, and 2pm to 3pm, at 19%. Teams in Sydney, Canberra and Hobart call Melbourne on their own clock.

From Brisbane, Melbourne's morning peak starts at 9am during daylight saving. From Adelaide, it is always 9:30am. From Perth, it is 8am in winter and 7am in summer. From Auckland it falls at 12pm New Zealand time, and from Singapore at 8am in winter and 7am in summer. The table below works out both windows for each city in mid-winter and mid-summer.

Melbourne's 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm windows in each caller's local time, on 15 July (Australian winter) and 17 November (Australian and New Zealand daylight saving).

The Victorian calendar and government buyers

Victoria's Labour Day falls on the second Monday in March. The Friday before the AFL Grand Final, usually the last Friday in September, is a Victorian public holiday, and that whole week is distracted. Melbourne Cup Day, the first Tuesday in November, is 3 November in 2026. Many people take the Monday before it as leave, and the spring racing carnival around it fills corporate diaries with hospitality. Treat Cup week as a half week and book meetings for the week after.

Victorian Government agencies buy through Buying for Victoria and state purchase contracts. As with any public sector buyer, use calls to find who owns a requirement and when it is going to market, and during a live tender speak only to the named contact.

Numbers, lists and data in Melbourne

Melbourne landlines start with 03, usually 03 8 or 03 9, and dial as +61 3 from overseas. Tasmania and regional Victoria also use 03, so check the address before you assume a contact is in Melbourne.

Banking, superannuation and insurance headquarters route calls through large switchboards that connect by name only, so build named direct dials for those accounts. In the manufacturing and logistics corridors, the main line is often answered by someone who knows exactly where the owner is. Ask when the owner is usually in, and call then. Wash any mobile that may be personal against the Do Not Call Register before you dial.

    Local events and industry associations

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the state's main business body and runs events across Melbourne and regional Victoria. The Committee for Melbourne brings together senior leaders from business, government and education. Industry associations in manufacturing, logistics and health run regular Melbourne events, and the large exhibition centres in Southbank host trade shows throughout the year.

Spring racing hospitality is an events calendar of its own: buyers who are hard to reach in October and November are often at corporate marquees. Call before the carnival to book meetings for the week after it.

A two week Melbourne calling sprint

Pick one corridor and one industry, such as food manufacturers in Dandenong South or logistics operators in the west. Owner-led businesses in these corridors often answer their own mobile, so verify mobiles first and wash any that may be personal against the Do Not Call Register.

Call Tuesday to Thursday in the 10am and 2pm windows, with at least four attempts per contact across the two weeks. Open with the corridor and the industry, not your product, and ask for a short conversation on site or by video. Compare the results with Nousu's Australian baseline of 14% connect and 1.3 meetings per 100 dials.

Replace the {{placeholders}} with your own details before you call.

    • Opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. We work with a few {{industry}} businesses around {{suburb}} on {{problem}}. Can I take 30 seconds to say why I called?'

    • Ask: 'Would it be worth 20 minutes on site next {{weekday}}, or by video if that is easier?'

    • Timing line in Cup season: 'I know the next fortnight is busy. Could we lock in something for the week after Cup?'

    Common mistakes when calling Melbourne

    • Pitching Melbourne with Sydney examples and assuming Sydney makes the decision.
    • Planning a launch for Grand Final week or Cup week.
    • Calling corporate switchboards for owner-led manufacturers who answer their own mobiles.
    • Ignoring the second Monday in March, when Victoria has Labour Day and New South Wales does not.
    • Booking meetings three weeks out during spring racing, when they decay fastest.
