City playbook

How to book more B2B meetings in Perth

Perth is the Australian city an east coast team gets wrong most often, because its best hours fall in the east coast lunch break and late afternoon. This guide is for in-house teams calling Perth and Western Australian businesses, from Perth or from the east. It covers the time gap, the shifts that cover it, where the buyers sit, the WA calendar and what changes on the call. The national rules and benchmarks are in the Australia playbook.

    Quick answer

How do you book more B2B meetings in Perth? Call Perth at 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm Perth time, which is 12pm to 1pm and 4pm to 5pm in Sydney in winter and an hour later in summer, so an east coast team needs a later shift to cover the Perth afternoon. Plan around fly-in fly-out rosters for site-based buyers, use Western Australian context on the call, and avoid the WA holidays and Diggers and Dealers week.

What is different about selling into Perth

Western Australia runs on AWST, UTC+8, with no daylight saving. Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra from April to October and 3 hours behind from October to April, and it shares a clock with Singapore all year. Telemarketing hours apply in the recipient's local time, so a 9am Sydney call into Perth is not only too early for the buyer, it can be before the permitted 9am start.

Perth's economy is anchored in mining, oil and gas and the mining equipment, technology and services sector, with engineering, construction and professional services around it. Many buyers manage operations in the Pilbara, the Goldfields or offshore, and some work fly-in fly-out rosters. A buyer who is on site for a fortnight is unreachable on a desk line, and a buyer who has just flown home will not want a sales call that day.

Perth buyers notice an east coast script. Opening with Sydney examples, Sydney pricing assumptions or a meeting time in Sydney time tells them they are an afterthought. Use WA context, book every callback in Perth time and treat WA as a market of its own.

Call windows into Perth, and the late shift

Perth's morning peak, 10am to 11am at a 22% connect rate in Nousu's data, falls at 12pm to 1pm in Sydney in winter and 1pm to 2pm in summer. That sits inside the east coast lunch dip, which is good news: it is exactly when calling Sydney and Melbourne is least productive, with connect rates down to 9%.

Perth's afternoon peak, 2pm to 3pm at 19%, falls at 4pm to 5pm in Sydney in winter and 5pm to 6pm in summer. Most east coast teams have stopped calling by then. If WA matters to your number, start one caller an hour or two later and give them the Perth afternoon, rather than asking the whole team to stay back.

For teams in Perth calling the east coast, the problem reverses: Sydney's 10am peak is 8am in Perth in winter and 7am in summer. A Perth team selling nationally should start early and give Perth its own 10am and 2pm. The table below works out Perth's windows from each city in mid-winter and mid-summer.

Perth's 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm windows in each caller's local time, on 15 July (Australian winter) and 17 November (Australian and New Zealand daylight saving).

Rosters, the WA calendar and government buyers

For site-based buyers, the roster is the calendar. Ask when they are next in Perth or off shift, log it in the CRM and call then. A short voicemail that says when you will call back works better than repeated unanswered dials; in Nousu's data, a voicemail on the first attempt makes a contact 15% less likely to be reached later, so leave it from the second attempt.

Western Australia's Labour Day falls on the first Monday in March, WA Day on the first Monday in June and King's Birthday in late September, all different from the east coast. WA Government agencies publish tenders on Tenders WA; use calls to find the owner of a requirement, and during a live tender speak only to the named contact.

Numbers, lists and data in Perth

Perth landlines start with 08 9 or 08 6, and dial as +61 8 from overseas. South Australia and the Northern Territory also use 08, so a single 08 list can span three time zones: Perth, Adelaide and Darwin. Sort an 08 list by city before you schedule it, or a block meant for Adelaide will reach Perth before 9am.

Resources companies route calls through central switchboards, and site staff are best reached by mobile when they are off shift. Record each contact's roster where it is published or offered, and wash any mobile that may be personal against the Do Not Call Register before you dial.

    Local events and industry associations

Diggers and Dealers, the mining forum held in Kalgoorlie in early August, takes a large share of WA's resources leadership and their advisers out of Perth for the week. Calls that week reach voicemail; calls in the fortnight before can book meetings for the week after.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCIWA) is the state's main business body. The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia and the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies represent the resources sector, and their events are where suppliers meet operators.

A two week Perth calling sprint

Pick one segment, such as maintenance managers at mid-tier miners or distributors in Osborne Park. Build a list with verified mobiles, record each buyer's roster where you can find it, and wash any number that may be personal against the Do Not Call Register.

From the east coast, give Perth the lunch hour and the late afternoon, Tuesday to Thursday, with at least four attempts per contact across the two weeks. Use WA context in the opener and book every meeting invite in Perth time. Compare the results with Nousu's Australian baseline of 14% connect and 1.3 meetings per 100 dials.

Replace the {{placeholders}} with your own details before you call.

    • Opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. We work with {{wa_peer_group}} on {{problem}}, mostly on sites like {{region}}. Have I caught you in Perth or on site?'

    • Roster line: 'When are you next back in town? I'll call you then, Perth time.'

    • Ask: 'Could we do 20 minutes on {{weekday}} at {{time}} Perth time?'

    Common mistakes when calling Perth

    • Calling Perth at 9am Sydney time, which is 6am or 7am in Perth.
    • Leaving the Perth afternoon peak uncovered because the east coast team has finished for the day.
    • Sending meeting invites in Sydney time.
    • Ringing site-based buyers repeatedly during their swing instead of booking a callback.
    • Planning a resources campaign for Diggers and Dealers week.
