City playbook
How to book more B2B meetings in Sydney
Sydney has the largest concentration of B2B buyers in Australia, and the most crowded inboxes and voicemails. This guide is for in-house teams calling Sydney businesses, from Sydney or from another city. It covers where the buyers sit, how the call windows look from each time zone, the local calendar and what changes on the call. The national rules and benchmarks are in the Australia playbook.
Quick answer
By Harry Constant, Founder of Nousu Collective. Published 3 November 2026. Benchmarks are Nousu's published figures from 218,000+ dials into Australian businesses. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
What is different about selling into Sydney
Sydney buyers are reachable, but they are also the most called. A Sydney head of finance or technology hears from vendors every week, so a generic opener is filtered within seconds. Precision matters more here than in any other Australian city: the right person, a specific reason, and a short ask.
Sydney is also several markets, not one. The CBD is dominated by financial services, insurance and professional services. Macquarie Park is technology and pharmaceuticals. Parramatta is now a second CBD with large NSW Government agencies, health and education. Western Sydney is manufacturing, logistics and construction, with the airport precinct at Badgerys Creek growing around it. A message that works on George Street will not work in Wetherill Park.
Many Sydney knowledge workers split their week between home and the workplace, so a desk line or switchboard reaches fewer people than it used to. Verified mobiles matter, and so does timing: in Nousu's data, Monday morning is slow because leaders are in internal meetings, and Friday afternoon is effectively dead. Wednesday is the most productive day.
| Precinct | Industries concentrated there | Who to call first |
|---|---|---|
| CBD and Barangaroo | Banking, insurance, funds management, law and accounting firms, corporate headquarters | Heads of function, chief financial officers, partners |
| North Sydney and St Leonards | Technology, telecommunications, insurance, health | IT, operations and marketing leaders |
| Macquarie Park | Technology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices | Commercial, operations and IT leaders |
| Parramatta | NSW Government agencies, health, education, professional services | Business owners in the agency and procurement leads |
| Norwest and the Hills | Corporate headquarters, health, technology | General managers and operations leaders |
| Western Sydney industrial areas | Manufacturing, logistics and warehousing, construction | Owners, operations, plant and fleet managers |
Call windows into Sydney from each time zone
Sydney runs on AEST, UTC+10, and AEDT, UTC+11, from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. Calls into Sydney should land at 10am to 11am, when 22% of Nousu's dials reach a live person, and 2pm to 3pm, at 19%.
For a team in Sydney calling Sydney, the job is protecting those two hours from internal meetings. For teams elsewhere, the windows move. From Brisbane, Sydney's morning peak starts at 9am during daylight saving. From Perth, it is 8am in winter and 7am in summer, which means a Perth team has to start early to catch Sydney at its best. From Auckland, Sydney's peaks fall at 12pm and 4pm New Zealand time, and from Singapore at 8am in winter and 7am in summer.
The table below shows Sydney's two peak windows in each caller's local time in mid-winter and mid-summer, worked out from the same time zone data as the helper on this page.
| Calling from | Morning peak, 15 July | Afternoon peak, 15 July | Morning peak, 17 November | Afternoon peak, 17 November |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | 10am to 11am | 2pm to 3pm | 10am to 11am | 2pm to 3pm |
| Brisbane | 10am to 11am | 2pm to 3pm | 9am to 10am | 1pm to 2pm |
| Adelaide | 9:30am to 10:30am | 1:30pm to 2:30pm | 9:30am to 10:30am | 1:30pm to 2:30pm |
| Perth | 8am to 9am | 12pm to 1pm | 7am to 8am | 11am to 12pm |
| Auckland | 12pm to 1pm | 4pm to 5pm | 12pm to 1pm | 4pm to 5pm |
| Singapore | 8am to 9am | 12pm to 1pm | 7am to 8am | 11am to 12pm |
Government, procurement and the local calendar
NSW Government agencies buy through the buy.nsw marketplace and its schemes and panels, and many agency teams are now based in Parramatta rather than the CBD. A cold call will not bypass procurement, but it can tell you who owns a requirement and when it will go to market. If a tender is open, use only the contact named in the tender documents.
Sydney's local calendar is the national one: New South Wales has no Sydney-only public holiday, and Labour Day falls on the first Monday in October. The slow periods are the weeks around Easter, the NSW school holidays and the stretch from mid December to Australia Day. Book February meetings in the first half of December.
Numbers, lists and data in Sydney
Sydney landlines start with 02, usually 02 8 or 02 9, but Canberra and the rest of New South Wales use 02 as well, so the area code alone does not confirm the city. Check the address before you assign a contact to a Sydney call block. In E.164 format, a Sydney landline is +61 2 followed by eight digits.
CBD corporates route most calls through a switchboard, so the useful number is a named direct dial or a verified mobile. Owner-led businesses in Western Sydney often publish a mobile on their website. Capture direct dials from email signatures whenever a prospect replies, and re-verify Sydney contacts every six months, because roles change often in a market this large.
Local events and industry associations
Business NSW is the state's peak business body, and its Sydney Business Chamber and Western Sydney Business Chamber run regular events for their members. Many national industry bodies, including the Financial Services Council and the Insurance Council of Australia, are headquartered in Sydney, and their conferences are where your buyers spend a day away from their desks.
Use events for timing as well as contacts. A call the week before a major industry conference can book a coffee at it; a call the week of the conference reaches voicemail. After an event, a call that mentions a specific session is warmer than any cold opener.
A two week Sydney calling sprint
Pick one precinct and one industry, such as professional services firms in the CBD or manufacturers in Western Sydney. Build a list of named decision makers with verified mobiles and direct lines, and wash any number that may be a personal mobile against the Do Not Call Register.
Call the list in the 10am and 2pm windows, Tuesday to Thursday, with at least four attempts per contact across the two weeks. Connect on LinkedIn before the second call, and send a two line email after every conversation. At the end of the sprint, compare your connect and meeting rates with Nousu's Sydney-relevant benchmarks: 14% of dials connecting and 1.3 meetings per 100 dials across Australia.
Replace the {{placeholders}} with your own details before you call.
Opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. I'll be quick: we work with {{sydney_peer_group}} on {{problem}}, and I noticed {{trigger}}. Worth 30 seconds to see if it's relevant?'
Ask: 'Could we find 20 minutes next {{weekday}}? I can come to {{precinct}} or do it by video.'
Gatekeeper: 'I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction. Who looks after {{area}} there?'

Sydney is 3 hours ahead of Perth on this date.
Perth: UTC+8. Sydney: UTC+11, daylight saving.
| Window | Sydney time | Your time in Perth | Overlap with your own peaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning peak (22% connect in Nousu's Australian data) | 10am to 11am | 7am to 8am, outside a normal day for you | None, so it will not compete with your local calls |
| Afternoon peak (19% connect in Nousu's Australian data) | 2pm to 3pm | 11am to 12pm | None, so it will not compete with your local calls |
- At least one window falls before 8am or after 6pm your time. Plan a shifted calling block or hand those calls to someone in a closer time zone.
- The helper does not check public holidays. Each market guide lists the holidays and slow weeks to plan around.
Common mistakes when calling Sydney
- Treating Sydney as one list instead of separate precincts and industries.
- Calling switchboards for buyers who now work part of the week from home.
- Using the same generic opener every other vendor uses on Sydney buyers.
- Letting internal meetings eat the 10am and 2pm windows.
- Calling a NSW Government team during a live tender instead of the named contact.
