    Quick answer

The best time to cold call Australian businesses is 10am to 11am in the prospect's local time, when 22% of Nousu Collective's dials reach a live person. The second-best window is 2pm to 3pm (19%). Wednesday is the best day. Calls are only allowed from 9am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

How we ranked: we compared providers on team location, channels, pricing transparency, contract terms and published results. Nousu Collective is our own agency.

Most advice on the best time to cold call comes from US studies. This page uses Nousu Collective's own data instead: every connect and conversation logged across 218,000+ B2B dials into Australian businesses between November 2024 and April 2026, grouped by the local time of the person being called.

Connect rates change by a factor of four across the working day, from 22% at the 10am peak to 5% after 5pm. Calls can start at 9am, but connect rates are lower while decision makers start their day, so use 9am to 10am for research, list preparation and callbacks prospects have asked for.

Why the 10am and 2pm windows matter

68% of our qualified meetings come from calls placed in two windows: 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm. An SDR who spreads dials evenly across the day only puts about a quarter of them into those windows. Our data suggests an SDR who spreads 500 weekly dials evenly across the day books roughly 40% fewer meetings than one who concentrates the same 500 dials in the peak windows. Same effort, different output. Moving dial volume into the peak windows is the biggest single cadence change most teams can make.

Best day of the week to cold call

Wednesday is the most productive day in our data, narrowly ahead of Tuesday and Thursday. Monday underperforms because senior decision makers in Australian companies spend much of Monday morning in stand-ups, leadership meetings and weekly planning. Friday afternoon connect rates collapse so steeply that we don't schedule calling then.

    • Best: Wednesday, then Tuesday and Thursday
    • Slow: Monday morning
    • Avoid: Friday afternoon

    When you're allowed to call

The Telecommunications (Telemarketing and Research Calls) Industry Standard 2017 sets the hours for telemarketing calls, including B2B calls to business numbers.

    DayPermitted calling hours
    Monday to Friday9am to 8pm
    Saturday9am to 5pm
    SundayNo calls
    National public holidaysNo calls

The hours are based on the local time of the person you're calling, not where you are. National public holidays are New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, plus any substitute day. The only exception is when the person has given express consent to a call at that time.

This rules out a common piece of US advice: calling at 7am or 8am to reach decision makers before the gatekeeper arrives. In Australia, telemarketing calls can't start before 9am.

State and territory public holidays, such as Melbourne Cup Day in Melbourne or the Ekka holiday in Brisbane, aren't covered by the national ban, but most offices are closed, so plan around them.

    Calling across Australian time zones

Plan every call by the prospect's local time. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory don't use daylight saving, so the gaps to Sydney change twice a year. Daylight saving in New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.

New Zealand's daylight saving starts on the last Sunday in September, a week before Australia's, so for that week Auckland is 3 hours ahead of Sydney.

    Mobiles vs switchboards

Direct mobile numbers are easier to source in Australia than in the US, and answer rates on mobiles are materially higher than on switchboard lines. If your connect rate is low even inside the peak windows, the problem is usually your data, not your timing.

    How we measured

Source: Nousu Collective operating data, November 2024 to April 2026: 218,000+ dials into about 24,000 Australian companies, placed by a 100% Australian SDR team based in Sydney. Times are the local time of the person called. Every dial and outcome was logged in the dialler at the time. These are Nousu performance benchmarks, not a sample of the whole market. Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to cold call businesses in Australia? 10am to 11am in the prospect's local time, when 22% of dials reach a live person in Nousu's data from 218,000+ B2B calls. The second-best window is 2pm to 3pm, at 19%. Together, those two windows produce 68% of our qualified meetings.

What is the best day to cold call in Australia? Wednesday, narrowly ahead of Tuesday and Thursday. Monday mornings are slow because senior leaders are in internal meetings, and Friday afternoons are so weak that we don't schedule calls then.

What hours can you legally make B2B sales calls in Australia? 9am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, in the local time of the person you're calling. No calls on Sundays or national public holidays unless the person has given express consent to a call at that time. These hours come from the Telemarketing and Research Calls Industry Standard 2017.

Is it worth cold calling after 5pm? Rarely for B2B. It's legal until 8pm on weekdays, but only 5% of our dials after 5pm reach a live person, the lowest of any time of day.

Should you cold call during lunch? Avoid it if you can. Between 12pm and 1:30pm our connect rate drops to 9%, less than half the 10am peak. Use that time for email and LinkedIn follow-up.

What time should I call Perth from Sydney? Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney from April to October and 3 hours behind from October to April. To reach Perth's 10am to 11am peak, call at 12pm to 1pm Sydney time in winter, or 1pm to 2pm during daylight saving.
