How to book more B2B meetings in Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand's capital, and central government shapes its economy the way the Commonwealth shapes Canberra's. This guide is for teams calling Wellington agencies and businesses, from New Zealand or Australia. It covers the procurement rules, where the buyers sit, the call windows and the public sector calendar. The national rules, including the UEMA, and the baseline benchmarks are in the New Zealand playbook.

    Quick answer

How do you book more B2B meetings in Wellington? Treat Wellington as two markets: government agencies, which buy through GETS, all-of-government contracts and formal procurement, and the consultancies, technology firms and professional services businesses around them, which take cold calls like any business. Call at 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm Wellington time, and plan around Wellington Anniversary Day and the summer break.

What is different about selling into Wellington

Central government agencies and their suppliers dominate Wellington's business market. Around Parliament and Lambton Quay sit ministries, departments and Crown entities, and around them the consultancies, technology firms, law firms and professional services businesses that work for them. Like Canberra, it needs two playbooks.

Agencies buy under the Government Procurement Rules. Opportunities are published on GETS, the Government Electronic Tenders Service, and many common goods and services are bought through all-of-government contracts and syndicated agreements. A cold call will not skip that process. During a live tender, communicate only through the point of contact named in the tender documents. Outside one, a call can find who owns a requirement and when it will go to market, and a short capability briefing is a reasonable ask.

The private sector around government is reachable and commercially minded, and for many vendors it is the faster route. Beyond it, Wellington has a strong screen and creative industry in Miramar, and industrial and logistics businesses across the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

Call windows into Wellington from each time zone

Wellington runs on New Zealand time, UTC+12, and UTC+13 from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. Nousu has not published New Zealand connect rates, so start from the Australian peak windows, 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm local time, and check your own numbers after four weeks.

From Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, Wellington's morning peak is 8am to 9am for most of the year, and its afternoon peak 12pm to 1pm. From Brisbane, the morning peak is 8am in winter and 7am in summer, and from Adelaide 7:30am all year. The table below works out both windows from each city in mid-winter and mid-summer.

Public servants generally work regular hours, and many are in meetings for much of the late morning. Calls booked in advance by email are common, and an agency contact is more likely to take a scheduled call than an unexpected one.

Wellington's 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm windows in each caller's local time, on 15 July (Australian winter) and 17 November (Australian and New Zealand daylight saving).

The public sector calendar and the Wellington holidays

The New Zealand Government's financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June, and the Budget is usually delivered in May, so agency spending is shaped in the first half of the calendar year and committed before 30 June. Election periods slow new commitments.

Wellington Anniversary Day falls on the Monday nearest 22 January: Monday 19 January in 2026 and Monday 25 January in 2027. It comes in the middle of the summer break, so Wellington's year starts properly in February. Matariki, Labour Day on the fourth Monday in October and King's Birthday on the first Monday in June are national holidays.

Numbers, lists and data in Wellington

Wellington landlines start with 04, and dial as +64 4 from overseas. Agency central numbers rarely connect a cold caller to anyone useful, so find the named owner of a requirement first, then the direct line or the agency's published contact for suppliers.

Do not build agency email addresses from a naming pattern. Under the UEMA, deemed consent depends on an address being conspicuously published in a business capacity; an address you constructed has not been. Use published addresses, or ask for the right one on the call. For private sector buyers, confirm entities on the NZBN register and verify numbers before you dial. This is general information, not legal advice.

    Local events and industry associations

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is the region's main business body and runs events that bring together business and government. Government agencies hold supplier briefings and industry days before major procurements, and those are where suppliers learn what is coming and who owns it.

Wellington is a small city with a dense professional network. A capability briefing for one agency team can lead to an introduction to another, so treat every agency conversation as part of a longer relationship.

A two week Wellington calling sprint

Start with the suppliers to government: consultancies and technology firms that hold all-of-government or agency panel places relevant to your offer. Build the list with named partners and practice leads, confirm entities on the NZBN register and verify direct lines and mobiles.

Call 10am and 2pm Wellington time, Tuesday to Thursday, with at least four attempts per contact. For agency contacts, check GETS for any live tender first, then ask for a short capability briefing and send a one page capability statement the same day. Compare the results with Nousu's Australian baseline of 14% connect and 1.3 meetings per 100 dials.

Replace the {{placeholders}} with your own details before you call.

    • Supplier opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. We help firms delivering {{service}} to government agencies with {{problem}}. Have I caught you at a bad time?'

    • Agency opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. I've checked GETS and I don't think there's a live tender for {{area}}. Would a 20 minute capability briefing be useful?'

    • Follow-up: a one page capability statement and a proposed time, sent the same day.

    Common mistakes when calling Wellington

    • Contacting agency officials about a live tender outside the named point of contact.
    • Asking agency staff for a sales demo instead of a capability briefing.
    • Ignoring the consultancies and technology firms that already supply government.
    • Scheduling a Wellington campaign launch in January.
    • Treating Wellington as a smaller Auckland, with the same list and the same script.
