City playbook
How to book more B2B meetings in Christchurch
Christchurch is the commercial centre of the South Island, with an economy built on agriculture and the engineering and technology around it. This guide is for teams calling Christchurch and Canterbury businesses, from New Zealand or Australia. It covers where the buyers sit, call windows, the seasons and the local calendar, and what changes on the call. The national rules, including the UEMA, and the baseline benchmarks are in the New Zealand playbook.
Quick answer

What is different about selling into Christchurch
Christchurch buyers are practical, owner-led more often than in Auckland, and suspicious of anything that sounds like a big city pitch. Many businesses here make things: farm technology, food processing equipment, engineered products, software for agriculture and industry. Talk about how the work gets done, not about transformation.
The city is also the gateway to the wider South Island. A Christchurch distributor, engineering firm or agritech company often serves farms and sites from Canterbury to Southland and the West Coast, and a buyer who sits in Christchurch may spend much of the week on the road. Use mobiles and book callbacks.
Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury feed the city's agritech and engineering sectors, and Christchurch's aerospace sector has grown around the airport. The rebuild after the Canterbury earthquakes left a large construction and engineering industry that still drives demand for equipment, materials and services.
| Area | Industries concentrated there | Who to call first |
|---|---|---|
| Central city | Professional services, technology, local government, health | Partners, general managers, technology leaders |
| Airport and Harewood | Aviation engineering, aerospace, freight | Engineering, operations and procurement managers |
| Hornby, Sockburn and Islington | Manufacturing, distribution, logistics | Owners, operations and warehouse managers |
| Lincoln and the Canterbury Plains | Agritech, agricultural research, farming | Founders, research leads, farm owners and managers |
| Woolston and Lyttelton | Industrial services, port and marine businesses | Operations and site managers |
Call windows into Christchurch from each time zone
Christchurch runs on New Zealand time, UTC+12, and UTC+13 from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. Nousu has not published New Zealand connect rates, so start from the Australian peak windows, 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm local time, and check your own numbers after four weeks.
From Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, the Christchurch morning peak is 8am to 9am for most of the year and the afternoon peak 12pm to 1pm. From Brisbane, the morning peak is 8am in winter and 7am in summer. The table below works out both windows from each city in mid-winter and mid-summer.
Owner-operators and site managers often start early. A short call at 8:30am Christchurch time, before they leave for site, can catch a buyer who is unreachable at 10am. Test it on your own list.
| Calling from | Morning peak, 15 July | Afternoon peak, 15 July | Morning peak, 17 November | Afternoon peak, 17 November |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Singapore | 6am to 7am | 10am to 11am | 5am to 6am | 9am to 10am |
Seasons and the Canterbury calendar
Agricultural buyers run on the farming year, not the financial year. Dairy calving, mostly from late winter into spring, is the busiest time on dairy farms, and harvest and lambing pull arable and sheep farmers away from the phone. Call farm owners and rural suppliers outside those peaks, and ask when their quiet months are.
Canterbury Anniversary Day falls on the Friday of Christchurch Show Week in November: Friday 13 November in 2026 and Friday 12 November in 2027. Show Week, with the New Zealand Cup races and the Canterbury A&P Show, is a social week for much of the city. Book meetings for the week after. The summer break runs from Christmas into January, as in the rest of New Zealand.
Numbers, lists and data in Christchurch
Christchurch landlines start with 03, and dial as +64 3 from overseas. The whole South Island uses 03, so an 03 number could be in Dunedin, Nelson or Queenstown; check the address before you assign a contact to a Christchurch block.
Many rural and owner-led businesses in Canterbury run on a mobile alone, and mobile coverage on farms and remote sites can be patchy. If a call drops or goes unanswered, send a short text only if you have consent under the UEMA; otherwise, leave a brief voicemail from the second attempt and call back at the time the buyer is usually back in range. Confirm entities on the NZBN register before you build a list around them.
Local events and industry associations
The Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce is the region's main business body and runs regular events. ChristchurchNZ, the city's economic development agency, supports the technology, aerospace and food sectors. Fieldays at Mystery Creek near Hamilton, held each June, is New Zealand's largest agricultural event, and many Canterbury agritech and rural suppliers attend.
In a city this connected, a referral from an event or a peer carries real weight. Ask every positive contact who else in Canterbury you should speak to.
A two week Christchurch calling sprint
Pick one segment, such as manufacturers in Hornby or agritech companies around Lincoln. Build the list from New Zealand sources, confirm entities on the NZBN register and verify mobiles, because many buyers are on the road or on site. Record the consent basis of every email address so your follow-ups meet the UEMA.
Call 8:30am, 10am and 2pm Christchurch time, Tuesday to Thursday, with at least four attempts per contact across the two weeks, and book callbacks around site visits. Compare the results with Nousu's Australian baseline of 14% connect and 1.3 meetings per 100 dials, and replace it with your own after four weeks.
Replace the {{placeholders}} with your own details before you call.
Opener: 'Hi {{first_name}}, it's {{your_name}} from {{company}}. We work with a few Canterbury {{industry}} businesses on {{problem}}. Have I caught you before you head out?'
Season line: 'I know {{season}} is busy for you. When does it ease off? I'll call back then.'
Ask: 'Would 20 minutes on {{weekday}} work, on site or by video?'

| Window | Christchurch time | Your time in Sydney | Overlap with your own peaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning peak (22% connect in Nousu's Australian data) | 10am to 11am | 8am to 9am | None, so it will not compete with your local calls |
| Afternoon peak (19% connect in Nousu's Australian data) | 2pm to 3pm | 12pm to 1pm | None, so it will not compete with your local calls |
- Nousu's published windows come from Australian dials. Use them as a starting point for New Zealand and Singapore, then check your own connect rates by hour after four weeks.
- The helper does not check public holidays. Each market guide lists the holidays and slow weeks to plan around.
