Channel partner recruitment works best as an outbound campaign: build a list of MSPs, resellers, integrators and consultancies whose customers match yours, call the owner or head of alliances, and book a short meeting about customer fit, margin and enablement. Your partner team runs the commercial conversation, then activates each new partner with an enablement call and a first joint deal.
This guide is for B2B software, cloud, cybersecurity and telco vendors recruiting partners in Australia and New Zealand: managed service providers (MSPs), resellers, systems integrators, consultancies, distributors and referral partners.
Why does channel partner recruitment stall?
Because the people responsible for it are busy looking after existing partners, and recruitment needs a steady volume of new conversations.
In our experience the same pattern shows up at most vendors:
- Partner managers serve existing partners first. This week's deal with a current partner usually beats a cold call to a new one.
- Recruitment is a volume game. You need many conversations to find the few partners with the right customers, skills and appetite.
- Partner owners are hard to reach. MSP and reseller owners are often with customers and hear from vendors every week.
- Inbound applications skew small. The partners who apply are not always the ones whose customers you want.
The fix: run partner recruitment as its own outbound motion.
Which channel partners should you recruit?
The ones whose customers already buy what you sell, or should. Each type makes money differently, so the pitch changes.
| Partner type | What they do for you | Who usually decides | What they care about |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSPs | Run IT for small and mid-market customers | Owner or managing director | Recurring margin, stack fit, support load |
| Resellers | Resell licences, hardware or services | Owner or sales director | Margin, deal registration, sales support |
| Systems integrators | Implement platforms for larger customers | Head of alliances | Services revenue, certification |
| Consultancies | Advise and implement for clients | Practice lead | Client outcomes, independence |
| Distributors | Carry many vendor lines and onboard resellers | Vendor manager | Reseller demand, line fit |
| Referral partners | Introduce customers but don't resell | Owner | A simple fee, protecting the client relationship |
Referral partners are the lightest model. Our own referral partner programme works this way: partners introduce, we run the sale.
Who decides at a channel partner?
In smaller MSPs and resellers it is the owner or managing director. In larger firms it is a head of alliances or partnerships, and in every case the technical lead has to agree that your product fits their stack.
- Owner or managing director: decides which vendors to add, often in one conversation.
- Head of alliances: runs vendor relationships at integrators, larger MSPs and distributors, and expects clear programme terms.
- Technical lead: checks integration and support load, and can block a partner the owner likes.
Book the first meeting with the decision maker, and ask on the call whether the technical lead should join. Our MSP and reseller booking guide has the call scripts.
What do channel partners need to hear before they take a meeting?
Five things: margin, enablement, deal protection, customer fit and no channel conflict with your direct team.
| What partners ask | What the caller says | What your partner team covers |
|---|---|---|
| "What's the margin?" | "That's what the meeting covers: resale, recurring and services income." | The margin structure |
| "Who trains my team?" | "You'd get sales and technical enablement. The meeting covers how." | Enablement plan and presales support |
| "Are my deals protected?" | "Our partner manager will walk you through how deal registration works." | Registration rules |
| "Will my customers want it?" | "Which of your customers deal with (problem)?" | Target accounts in their base |
| "Will you sell direct to my customers?" | "Fair question. Our partner manager will explain how direct and partner deals are split." | Channel conflict policy |
Adjust these lines to your actual programme, and never quote margin or terms on a cold call: the caller earns the meeting, and your partner team owns the commercial detail.
How do you run a channel partner recruitment campaign by phone?
Start with a written ideal partner profile, build the list from it, then call daily with email and LinkedIn follow-up. A phone-led partner recruitment campaign runs in eight steps.
- Define the ideal partner profile. Partner type, size, customer segments, regions and complementary vendor lines. Our ICP framework works for partners too.
- Build the list. Industry associations, distributor reseller lists, partner directories of complementary vendors and LinkedIn.
- Map the contacts. Owner, head of alliances and technical lead, with direct lines where you can find them.
- Write the talk track. Why you are calling, one question about their customers and a clear meeting ask.
- Call daily and follow up. Phone first, with email and LinkedIn between calls. See our multi-channel outreach approach.
- Qualify on the call. Customer overlap, technical capability and capacity (see the next section).
- Book and hand over. Put the meeting in your partner manager's calendar with a handover brief: partner type, customer base, current vendor lines and questions asked.
- Review weekly. Which partner types say yes, which objections repeat and which list sources produce conversations.
How do you qualify a channel partner?
On three tests: customer base overlap, technical capability and capacity. In our experience, a partner that fails any one of them signs and then sells little.
| Test | Question to ask | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer base overlap | "Which of your customers deal with (problem) today?" | Names a segment or specific customers | "All sorts of businesses" |
| Technical capability | "Who on your team would deploy and support this?" | A named engineer or practice | Nobody owns the area |
| Capacity | "Could you take on a new line this quarter?" | A slot in their plan | Fully committed elsewhere |
| Commercial intent | "What would make this worth adding?" | Margin, a customer request or a gap | Only asks for free licences |
Agree what a qualified partner meeting means before calling starts, using our guide to how an outbound agency defines a qualified meeting.
How do you activate recruited partners?
With an enablement call and a first joint deal soon after signing. In our experience, partners that don't work an early deal rarely start later.
- Enablement call. Sales and technical basics, deal registration and the first customers to approach.
- First joint deal. Pick one or two customers from the partner's base together and support the first meeting.
- Activation calls into your existing base. Calling signed partners who went quiet to book an enablement session or pipeline review is often the quickest win.
How do you measure channel partner recruitment?
Measure the funnel through to each partner's first registered deal, not partners signed.
| Stage | What to count |
|---|---|
| Activity | Partners called, live conversations |
| Recruitment | Recruitment meetings held with a decision maker |
| Signing | Partners signed |
| Enablement | Partners who completed the enablement call |
| Activation | Partners with a first registered deal |
| Revenue | Partner-sourced pipeline and revenue |
For context, across 218,000+ Nousu dials into Australian businesses, 14% reached a live person, and onshore callers booked 1.3 meetings per 100 dials against 0.3 for offshore teams. Those are cross-campaign figures, not partner benchmarks, so track your own funnel from the first week.
Is it legal to cold call channel partners in Australia?
Generally, yes. Calls to business numbers are generally not restricted by the Do Not Call Register, but an owner's mobile mainly used for personal reasons can be registered. The Telecommunications (Telemarketing and Research Calls) Industry Standard 2017 sets calling hours (weekdays 9am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, no Sundays or national public holidays) and requires callers to identify the business and enable calling line identification. Follow-up emails must meet the Spam Act 2003. ACMA is the regulator. For New Zealand partners, check the local rules separately. This is general information, not legal advice.
How does Nousu help with channel partner recruitment?
We book partner recruitment meetings and can run partner activation calls into your existing partner base. Your partner team runs the commercial conversation: margin, terms and deal registration.
Our senior callers all work in-house in Sydney. We build the partner list, map owners, alliance leads and technical leads, call daily and hand over each meeting with notes. We work with vendors in cloud services, cybersecurity and telco and UCaaS, where MSPs and resellers are often an important route to market.
Pricing starts at $7,000 a month (ex GST), with the exact fee quoted after a 30-minute call. The initial term is 3 months, then rolling monthly, and first calls are 2 weeks from sign-off. Most campaigns book about 8 qualified meetings a month once running, within a range of 6 to 20, and from month two an agreed meeting floor applies, with a credit for every meeting short. Across our calling, 50% of phone-booked meetings became sales opportunities.
Frequently asked questions
What is channel partner recruitment? Channel partner recruitment is how a vendor finds and signs businesses that will sell, deploy or refer its product: MSPs, resellers, systems integrators, consultancies, distributors and referral partners. It works best as a planned outbound campaign, with an ideal partner profile, a targeted list, daily calling and meetings booked for your partner team.
How do you recruit MSP partners in Australia? List MSPs whose customers match yours and call the owner or managing director. Open with their customers and how they would make money, not your features. Avoid Monday mornings and month end, book callbacks and bring the technical lead in early. Then activate each new MSP with an enablement call and a first joint deal.
Who should you call at a reseller or MSP? At smaller firms, the owner or managing director, who usually decides on new vendors. At larger MSPs, integrators and distributors, the head of alliances. The technical lead has to agree your product fits their stack, so ask on the first call whether they should join the meeting.
What do partners want from a vendor partner programme? Clear margin, sales and technical enablement, deal registration that protects their deals, customers in their base who would buy, and a firm rule that your direct team won't compete for their customers. Callers raise these themes; your partner team covers the actual terms in the meeting.
What is partner activation? Partner activation is getting a signed partner to work its first deal. It usually means an enablement call soon after signing, choosing one or two customers from the partner's base together and supporting the first meeting. It also covers calling quiet partners to book enablement or pipeline reviews.
Can an outsourced SDR agency recruit channel partners for you? Yes, for the meeting booking. Nousu builds the partner list, calls owners, alliance leads and technical leads, and books partner recruitment meetings with a handover brief. We can also run activation calls into your existing partner base. Your partner team runs the commercial conversation, including margin, terms and deal registration.
